Understanding your results of assessment
In TAFE, you are assessed based on your competency. Your competency is based on whether or not you can perform specific tasks and duties to the standard expected in employment.
If you receive a J on your results of assessment, you have achieved competency for that unit.
If you receive an M on your results of assessment, you have not achieved competency for that unit.
You may be awarded other grades, which are listed in the table below.

Student is unsuccessful in at least one piece of assessment. |

Performance Level Assessment (PLA)
In some TAFE Open Learning courses, you may be awarded a Performance Level Assessment (PLA).
PLA provides additional information across a range of the following areas of performance:
- reliability and responsibility
- originality, creativity and innovation
- initiative and autonomy
- resource planning and use
- depth and breadth of knowledge and skills acquired.
The PLA grades you may be awarded can be found in the table below.
