Understanding your results of assessment

In TAFE, you are assessed based on your competency. Your competency is based on whether or not you can perform specific tasks and duties to the standard expected in employment.

If you receive a J on your results of assessment, you have achieved competency for that unit.

If you receive an M on your results of assessment, you have not achieved competency for that unit.

You may be awarded other grades, which are listed in the table below.

Student has been assessed and has satisfied all the requirements for the Unit of Competency or Module.

M

Competency not yet achieved

Student has commenced the summative assessment process against the requirements of the unit of competency, by submitting their first assessment requirement for the unit.

1. Student is successful in at least one piece of assessment but either fails to complete the remaining assessment (and has been given the opportunity to be assessed against all assessment items) or is found not competent in the remaining assessment.

2. Student is unsuccessful in at least one piece of assessment.

K

Underpinning knowledge and skills achieved

Successful completion of the underpinning knowledge and skills.

This is not a final grade.

NATT

No attendance - no participation

Withdrawn without participation

Student enrolled but did not engage in a learning activity for the Unit of Competency or Module

AW

Withdrawn - with participation

Student has engaged in a learning activity of the Unit of Competency or Module but has not started the summative assessment process for the Unit (i.e. student has participated but has not submitted their first assessment).

Performance Level Assessment (PLA)

In some TAFE Open Learning courses, you may be awarded a Performance Level Assessment (PLA).

PLA provides additional information across a range of the following areas of performance:

Grade code given when a Program is flagged for PLA; however the Competency is not flagged for PLA assessment.

Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) courses have their own specific grading system, as listed below.
